Juvenile Curfew Ordinance Enacted to Enhance Public Safety
The Sunnyside City Council has approved a new juvenile curfew ordinance designed to reduce crime, protect minors, and support local families. This ordinance modernizes previous laws and brings our code into alignment with Washington state law (RCW 35.21.635).
Curfew Hours
• Sunday through Thursday: 11:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.
• Friday and Saturday: 11:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.
Exemptions include:
• Being with a parent or authorized adult
• Traveling to/from lawful employment, school, or religious events
• Emergencies or other necessary reasons
• Emancipated or married minors
Parental Responsibility:
Parents or guardians may face citations if they knowingly allow minors to break curfew.
Enforcement & Penalties:
• 1st violation: Warning
• 2nd (within 1 year): $100 fine
• 3rd or more: $250 fine
Officers are trained to inform minors/guardians of available services and may take custody only when necessary.
The police chief will provide regular updates to City Council on the effectiveness and enforcement of this ordinance.
