On April 2, 2024, a 32-year-old male was found in his cell unresponsive. The Sunnyside Fire Department was contacted, arrived and was unable to revive the male.
The male was arrested by the Toppenish Police Department and booked into the Sunnyside City Jail on March 29, 2024, after being cleared by a medical professional for a pre-existing medical issue. This medical contact was not related to the arrest or use of force during the arrest.
The male was housed in a cell with a second male and was found unresponsive at 0942 hours. There was no indication of any type of assault. The Yakima County Coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine cause of death.
