At approx. 1800 hours on Tuesday, July 9th, the Sunnyside Fire Department was dispatched to Excel Dairy Products at 502 North Avenue in Sunnyside for a commercial structure fire. Reporting party advised a large number of chemicals stored in and around the fire building. As a precaution, Sunnyside PD was requested to assist with evacuations to residences in the immediate area due to the unknown chemicals. Crews arrived on scene to a large metal building fully charged with smoke. A 2nd alarm was requested for resources due to the size and complexity of the incident. Fire resources from the City of Grandview, City of Mabton, Yakima County Fire District #5, & West Benton Fire-Rescue (Prosser) responded to assist. Pacific Power, Sunnyside Water Department and Department of Ecology also assisted.

The fire was contained to the main fire building with minimal smoke and water damage to exposures. There is no concern for public health in regard to any chemicals involved. Department of Ecology assessed the vicinity and determined little to no impact on site, with no impact to the surrounding area and beyond.

One firefighter was sent to the hospital and treated and released for heat-related illness. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
