Citywide Pedestrian Improvements Project

PROJECT INFORMATION

The City of Sunnyside is pleased to have received funding from the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) Early Opportunity for Complete Streets Program. This funding will be used to make significant improvements to curb ramps, including curb and gutter, sidewalk, asphalt patching, and pavement markings specifically focused on ADA improvements adjacent to schools along 16th Street and at the intersection of 9th Street and Lincoln Avenue.

During construction we will update this page weekly and notice any important/urgent matters.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

This project will commence on Thursday, August 15, 2024, with mobilization, project signing, and saw-cutting. Excavation work will begin on Monday, August 19, 2024. Working hours are Monday through Thursday from 7 AM to 5 PM, except holidays. Construction will continue until approximately September 26, 2024.

WEEKLY UPDATES

August 21, 2024 - Contractor has completed sidewalk and ramp removals at the various intersection along S. 16th Street.  All ramps will be accessible early in the week.  Contractor will begin ramp replacement work starting from the E. Edison Avenue working south past the schools towards E. Lincoln Avenue.  At least one set of ramps will remain open at intersections as repair work progresses.  Pedestrians should use caution and beware of loose grave in the ramp areas. 

August 30, 2024 - Concrete pouring for curb and gutters will start at 6:30 AM today at 16th Street and Harrison Avenue heading south toward Lincoln. The first delivery is anticipated to be completed prior to school starting with the second truck arriving around 11:30 AM-12:00 PM. Additional staff will be on site to assist with pedestrian traffic.

September 9, 2024 - In the early part of the week, the contractor  will complete placement of new concrete ramps on the south end of S. 16th Street including at E. Lincoln Avenue then move to S. 9th Street and E. Lincoln Avenue then lastly S. 6th Street near Washington Elementary. Following concrete work the contractor will prepare and place hot mix asphalt at all locations in the same day in the later part of the week. Pedestrians should use caution and beware of wet concrete and fresh asphalt while traveling through the work zones.
