Fire Suppression & Life Safety
Operationally, Sunnyside Fire Department (SFD) is responsible for emergency medical services, fire suppression, rescue activities, hazardous materials response, and disaster mitigation within the City of Sunnyside. Our department consists of 21 career staff and 10 volunteers. They take great pride in providing a comprehensive approach to protecting the community and surrounding areas from all hazards. We offer full fire protection, public education, and fire prevention services within the 6.2 square miles of the city. Additionally, we provide Advanced Life Support transportation services to a significant portion of the Lower Yakima Valley. All personnel are cross trained to provide suppression and EMS services in our community. As part of our suppression and prevention programs, the staff conducts company-level fire inspections of businesses and pre-fire planning for commercial buildings. We also staff first-out apparatus for Yakima County Fire District #5, Station 13, on an automatic aid basis.
The state of Washington requires continuing education for all firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. It is necessary to maintain complete and accurate records for each person on staff. These records must include each person's credentials and certifications. Class hours, training drills (monthly and daily), and equipment inspections are just a few of the items that necessitate detailed record-keeping. It is the responsibility of the training officer to ensure that our department's personnel receive the most current training exercises and literature available.
