Subject:        City of Sunnyside Seeks Public Input on Proposed Four-Way Stop Conversions at Intersections Along E. Edison Avenue on S. 5th Street and S. 9th Street

In response to ongoing safety and traffic concerns raised by residents and businesses, the Sunnyside City Council is four-way stop conversions at two key intersections: South 5th Street and Edison Avenue, and South 9th Street and Edison Avenue. These intersections have been the subject of public concern regarding vehicle and pedestrian safety, visibility, and congestion.

At the May 5, 2025, City Council study session, Interim Public Works Director Cus Arteaga presented preliminary options for addressing these concerns, including the potential conversion of both intersections into four-way stop configurations. The intent behind these proposed changes is to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and reduce the risk of collisions.

As part of the evaluation process, Public Works staff have contacted businesses located in the immediate vicinity of both intersections. Input from the business community has ensured that any changes made will support traffic safety while minimizing unintended impacts on local commerce and accessibility.

In addition, the Sunnyside City Council is inviting members of the public to provide comments and feedback regarding the proposed changes. Community members are encouraged to participate during the public comment portion of the May 12, 2025 City Council Regular Meeting, where their input will be formally received and considered in the decision-making process.

The City Council meeting will be held at 6:00 PM in the City Council Chambers, located at 818 E. Edison Avenue, Sunnyside, WA. Residents may also submit written comments in advance to the City Clerk’s Office by email at cityclerk@sunnyside-wa.gov or by mail to 818 E. Edison Avenue, Sunnyside, WA 98944.
