Subject: Sunnyside Police Stepping Up Security for Cinco de Mayo Festival
As the City of Sunnyside and the Noon Rotary Club prepare to welcome thousands of attendees to our annual Cinco de Mayo Festival, public safety will remain our highest priority. The City is taking extensive steps to ensure a safe, family-friendly environment for all who attend this vibrant cultural celebration.
The Sunnyside Police Department will be out in full force throughout the weekend, with increased staffing, high visibility patrols, and support from regional law enforcement partners. This year’s safety measures include coordinated emergency response planning, advanced monitoring technologies, and strategically deployed resources across the festival area.
“Public safety is not just a priority—it’s a commitment,” said Sunnyside Police Chief Rob Layman. “We are deploying every available tool, tactic, and officer to ensure that everyone who comes to enjoy the festivities can do so without fear.”
While specific security protocols will not be disclosed to protect operational effectiveness, residents and visitors will notice a strong, well-coordinated law enforcement presence focused on prevention, rapid response, and maintaining public order.
“I’m grateful for our police department’s efforts in putting together this plan. We are committed to having a safe event. Public safety is the city council’s number one priority for our community,” said City Manager Mike Gonzalez.
“We have completed our security plan for the upcoming Cinco de Mayo event. We have increased our number of officers over previous years. There will be a concentrated effort in the carnival area using our officers along with reserves from the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office. During peak hours drones will be used and available,” said Chief Layman.
The festival—known for its music, food, parades, and rich cultural showcases—draws families and visitors from across the region. In addition to increased patrols, officers will be stationed throughout the event to assist with safety concerns, deter unlawful behavior, and foster a sense of security within the crowd. The City’s goal is to create an event that is not only fun but also safe for everyone, especially children and elders.
“We are grateful to the partners who sponsored Cinco de Mayo this year so that we are able to enhance security measures. It is incredibly important that we ensure that our community members are able to come together and celebrate their culture and truly enjoy the festivities.” said Noon Rotary President Sierra Foster.
The Cinco de Mayo Festival kicks off today, May 2, 2025 through the weekend featuring a parade, car show, live performances, a Charro competition, vendors, and more. Attendees are encouraged to celebrate responsibly and remain alert. If you see something concerning, report it to the nearest officer or call 911.
