Posted on: April 22, 2025[ARCHIVED] PRESS RELEASE | Internet Outage Affecting City Email and Services

UPDATE 04/22/2025
We want to keep our community informed about the ongoing internet and email outage affecting several city services.
The ATF has likely completed its investigation into the suspected arson at a local fruit warehouse. Now, we’re waiting on the warehouse and its insurance company to authorize access so Yakima County technicians can begin repair work.
In the meantime, we’ve taken steps to keep essential services running:
• Police dispatch is fully operational, thanks to wireless hotspots and secure VPN connections.
• Finance staff at City Hall can still process payments in person at the utility billing window, using a temporary wireless hotspot.
Our biggest challenge remains email. Since our on-premise server depends on internet access, we’re currently unable to send or receive emails. If you’ve recently reached out and haven’t heard back, that’s why. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
We’re also reaching out to partners like the Sunnyside School District to explore using their fiber service provider, as we continue to look at ways to build stronger, more reliable internet service for city operations.
For a direct line to City Hall call 509-836-6305.
We know this has been frustrating. Thank you for sticking with us—we’ll continue to share updates as soon as we have them.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 19, 2025
Internet Outage Affecting City Email and Services
Sunnyside, WA – The City of Sunnyside is currently experiencing an internet outage that is impacting access to our email system and other digital services. This disruption is due to a broader issue affecting our internet service provider, Yakima County, which is currently unable to make necessary repairs because of an ongoing ATF-led arson investigation at the site of a recent fire.
As a result of the outage:
• Emails to the City of Sunnyside may bounce back or go unanswered at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience as we work through this issue.
• Utility payments can still be made in person at the billing window at City Hall. Our team has installed a temporary wireless solution to continue serving residents.
• If you have urgent questions, please call the City Hall main line at 509-836-6305. Our staff is available to assist you during regular business hours.
We understand the frustration this may cause and are taking steps to minimize disruption to public services. Our IT Department is working closely with Yakima County and preparing contingencies to ensure more reliable service in the future.
We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
