Proclamations - Pearl Harbor Rememberance Day

Brief Description - WHEREAS, on early Sunday morning, December 7th, 1941, 130 vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet lay quiet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, unaware that the worst naval disaster in American history was about to be fall them. The surprise attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy, that left more than 2,400 Americans dead, including 68 civilians, and 1000 wounded, will forever be emblazoned on the memories of those who survived, and, WHEREAS, On August 23, 1994, the United State Congress, by Public Law 103-308, designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, and, WHEREAS, On this, the seventy-sixth anniversary of that fateful day, we join with President Donald Trump and Washington Governor Jay Inslee and the nation in paying homage to the men and women who survived the attack, as well as those who gave their lives. NOW THEREFORE, I, James A. Restucci, Mayor of the City of Sunnyside, Washington, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Washington and on behalf of the City Council do hereby proclaim Thursday, December 7, 2017 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day in the City of Sunnyside. I encourage all citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs and ceremonies, and activities in honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. FUTHERMORE, I direct the City Manager to lower the flags of the United States of America and Washington State to half-staff at all city facilities, pursuant to SMC 1.14 and that the flag remain at half-staff until close of business on that same day. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I HAVE HEREUNTO SET MY HAND AND CAUSED THE SEAL OF THE CITY OF SUNNYSIDE TO BE AFFIXED.
