Sunnyside Media Release - Bridge Detour
UPDATE:
The bridge located at East Edison Avenue and SR 241 is now open.
Yakima County conducted an inspection today of the bridge following a truck collision this past weekend. It has experienced significant damage, but did not compromise its structural integrity. City staff will be placing larger barrel coves along the guardrail and bridge railing to make it more visible to motorists as they turn onto the bridge.
We will be meeting with WSDOT maintenance and engineering divisions over the next couple of weeks to discuss repairs and schedules.

Temporary Closure of East Edison Bridge at Highway 241
Acting on the guidance of the City’s engineering firm, the City of Sunnyside today has temporarily closed the bridge on East Edison Avenue just west of the intersection at Highway 241, following a collision at that location on April 24, 2021.
On the afternoon of April 24, a tractor/trailer truck attempted to turn westbound onto East Edison Avenue from Highway 241 and collided with the guard rail and bridge railing. East Edison Avenue is not a designated truck route. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and no other vehicles were involved.
Law enforcement officials are investigating the accident.
Upon initial review by the City’s contracted engineering firm, HLA, on the morning of April 26, the City was advised to close the bridge to vehicular traffic pending a more thorough inspection of the damage by Yakima County bridge inspectors and the determination of next steps.
Westbound traffic from Highway 241 is being detoured north to Sheller Road and south to Factory Road. Eastbound traffic on East Edison is being detoured back at Van Nutley Drive.
