COUNCILOR Dean Broersma

Biography


Councilor Broersma was appointed to the Sunnyside City Council on March 25, 2013 to fill an unexpired term and was elected to the City Council in November 2013. On January 11, 2016, he was chosen by his peers to serve as Deputy Mayor for a two year term from 2016 to 2017. His current term (Position 2) expires December 31, 2021.

Councilor Broersma has lived in the lower valley since 1974 and graduated from Sunnyside Christian School and Granger High School. In 1986 he graduated from Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa with a degree in Secondary Education.

Councilor Broersma taught Spanish in Michigan before returning to Sunnyside in 1989. In 1990, he then began the Spanish program at Sunnyside Christian High School through 1997.

Councilor Broersma has served with Christian Reformed World Missions and on the Board of Directors of Colegios Cristianos Reformados (Cocref) in the Dominican Republic from 1997 to 2003. In 2003, he returned to Sunnyside.

Currently, Councilor Broersma owns a small business and is married with four daughters.

Councilor Broersma has served as a council member at Sunnyside Christian Reformed Church and as a board member at Sunnyside Christian School.
